This Saturday I went to the Bushcraft at Harmergreen Woods. I met up with my friends and Akela. First we did tracking and plaster casts. After that we did cooking but I kept getting smoke in my eyes. Next we did firelighting, After we did square lashing that I found interesting because I didn’t know how to do it. Finally it was lunch and we were starving! When we were sitting in the tent it blew over us and we were laughing and screaming! Next we did shelter building and it was probably the best, we set up a little tent made out of a plastic cover and ropes. Then we went to sleep – well Ed didn’t, he was poking us. Then we did first aid where we learnt the recovery position, CPR and how to make a sling. I learnt loads of stuff at Bushcraft, it was a brilliant day and thank you to everyone who took us there.

At the Bushcraft Day we tried firelighting, cooking, first aid, building shelters, making rope along with pioneeriing, plaster casting and tracking. My favourite activities were cooking and firelighting. On building shelters I think we could have built it with leaves and sticks instead of having tents.

As well as the cubs enjoying the activities on the Bushcraft Day, a few of our cub and scout leaders from 8th also went with Peter our GSL, to help on the bases. We took with us a few of our Young Leaders and older scouts to help teach the cubs some of the skills. This enabled some of the scouts to complete parts of their own badges, two of them were also able to complete the final parts of their Chief Scouts Gold Award. Fantastic teamwork all round, and great to be back at Harmergreen, one of the scouts favourite backwoods campsites.
